What actually happens on the trail

Two days, written the way Pak Wil walks them: the forest climb up, a night on the rim, sunrise over the caldera, and the walk back down. No summit. Nothing hidden behind a tab.

Day 1 · Senaru rainforest climb to the rim

Up through the jungle to the crater rim, camp, sunset over the caldera.

A real climb, just no summit scramble waiting at the end of it.

Tents on the crater rim above a sea of clouds at sunset
Crater rim camp · sunset above the cloud sea

We pick you up from your hotel anywhere on Lombok and drive up to Senaru, the village at the bottom of my own trail. Unlike the Sembalun side, this route starts in rainforest, shade almost the whole way, big trees over the path, birds and usually monkeys. For families and anyone who doesn't love open sun, that makes the climb a lot kinder.

We stop on the trail for a hot lunch cooked by your team, not a sandwich. The climb is steady and uphill, about six to seven hours, a proper day's effort, but no scrambling and nothing technical. Your porters reach camp ahead of you, so the tent is up and water is on for tea when you arrive.

Camp sits right on the crater rim at about 2,641 m. From here the whole caldera opens below you: the lake, the smoking cone of Baru Jari across it, the summit on the far side. The sunset over all of it is the reward, and there is no two o'clock alarm tonight. We eat early. It's cool up here after dark, and the sleeping bag in your kit is rated for it.

“No two o'clock alarm. On this route the rim sunrise is the whole point, and you sleep until it comes.”

Day 2 · Sunrise on the rim, then down through the forest

Sunrise over the caldera, breakfast, and a steady walk back down.

You wake when the sky does, not at two in the morning.

The crater lake Segara Anak seen from the rim in the early morning
Sunrise over the caldera and Segara Anak, from the rim

You wake on the rim a little before sunrise, no headlamp march, no gravel slope. Coffee in your hands, and the sun comes up across the caldera, lighting the lake and the cone of Baru Jari below you. This is the view people climb the summit for, and from the rim you get it without the 2 a.m. push. We take our time over it.

After breakfast we pack and start back down the same rainforest trail. The descent is steady, about five to six hours including a stop for lunch, long enough that the loaner poles earn their place, gentle enough for younger and older legs. Same trees, same monkeys, the air getting warmer as you drop.

We finish at Senaru village by early afternoon. Cold drink, real toilet, a chance to wash your face, and your driver waiting to take you back to your hotel on Lombok or to Bangsal for the Gili boats. No summit, no regret. A real mountain, a night on the rim, and a sunrise most people never see.

“The rim gives you the view. The summit is another trip. Choosing the rim is an honest choice, not a lesser one.”

Who guides you on this route

You walk with Pak Wil. Not a stranger at the gate.

I was born in Senaru, at the bottom of this trail. I started carrying loads as a porter, then guided, and in 2017 I began taking my own trekkers all the way up. On this route you walk with me, and because there's no summit push, I have time to point out the birds and the big trees on the way up. It's a good one to walk slowly, which is why I like guiding families on it.

“People think you need the summit for the view. Sunrise from the rim, the whole caldera opening up below you. That alone is worth the climb.”

Who this route is for, and who it isn't.

“People ask if it's too easy. It isn't. It's a real two-day climb. It just doesn't have the summit scramble. If standing at 3,726 m is your dream, I'll tell you honestly to book a different route.”

This route suits you if…

  • You want a real mountain night without the 2 a.m. summit push.
  • You're walking with kids, or with older parents, at a gentle pace.
  • You're happy with a steady uphill day and a steady downhill day.
  • A sunrise over the caldera from the rim is enough, you don't need the top.
  • Your knees are okay with a long, gentle downhill on day two.

Pick a summit route instead if…

  • Standing at 3,726 m is the whole reason you're coming, so book the Full Rinjani 3D2N or Summit 2D1N instead.
  • You'd feel cheated coming home without the summit photo, be honest with yourself now.
  • You specifically want the crater lake and hot springs. This route sees the lake from the rim but doesn't descend to it.
  • You have a heart or breathing condition you haven't checked with a doctor, talk to us first either way.
Bringing kids or older parents
  • We slow the pace and plan shorter days. This route has no summit night, so there's no hard cut-off to race to.
  • Porters can carry more of the load so young legs and older knees carry less. Tell us the ages when you message.
  • If it's not the right fit for your group, we'll say so before you book. We'd rather lose the booking than put someone on the wrong trail.

About altitude: the rim sits at about 2,641 m, high enough to feel the thinner air on the climb, low enough that altitude sickness is rare and mild when it shows at all. There's no 3,726 m summit exposure on this route, which is a big part of why it suits kids and older walkers. Your guide still watches everyone for headache, nausea or balance off, and we go down if anyone needs to.

Set on the summit? Don't book this route to save effort and then regret it. The Full Rinjani 3D2N (summit, lake and hot springs) or the Summit 2D1N (the fastest way to the top) are the ones to book, we'd rather send you to the right trek.

Group size & solo travellers

How we pair you, and how big the group gets.

For couples and pairs, this is a private trip by default: your guide, your porters, your pace. You set off when you're ready, you rest when you need to, and nobody you didn't choose is walking with you. On a family trip that matters more: your own pace, your own breaks, nobody you didn't choose setting the speed.

Travelling solo? We pair you with another solo or a small group, so the per-person cost stays fair. On this route a joined group is capped at 10 people with two guides, kept small enough that nobody gets strung out on the forest trail.

What we carry out

Porter loads and trash policy on this route.

  • Porter loads kept under the park's 30 kg limit. About 25-30 kg for a trek porter, up to 20 kg for a personal porter, with pay scaled to the load. We confirm the details with you before you book.
  • Trash carried out: every wrapper, every can, weighed at the registration office when we check out after the trek. Two days on the mountain is still two days of rubbish, and none of it stays up there.
  • This route: porters paid above the village day-rate, fed the same kind of hot cooked meals and given proper tents to sleep in, not under tarps.

Available dates & how to book

Pick a month. We book it on WhatsApp.

The season runs April to December, and the park closes in the wet months. June to October gives the clearest rim sunrises. Tap a month to start the message.

Before you book

The things people ask about this route.

Is the crater rim worth it without summiting?
For a lot of people, yes. The rim at sunrise gives you the whole caldera, the lake and the smoking cone below, the same view the summit looks down on, without the 2 a.m. gravel push. You still get a real mountain night and a proper climb. If the summit photo is the point of the trip for you, this isn't your route, and we'll say so.
Can my kids or older parents do this?
Usually, yes, it's the route we most often recommend for families. The climb is in shade, there's no scrambling and no summit night, and we plan shorter days and a gentler pace. Porters carry more so young legs and older knees carry less. Tell us everyone's ages when you message and we'll give you an honest answer for your group.
How cold is it on the rim at night?
Cool, not brutal. The rim sits around 2,641 m. A normal night is around 10-20°C, but it can come as low as 5°C before dawn and colder in the wind, so pack for the cold end. The bag, mat and 3-season tent in your kit handle a normal night. Bring a warm layer, a hat and gloves and you'll be comfortable for the sunset and the early morning. If you're unsure, ask Pak Wil what he'd bring for your month.
Will I be bored, is it too easy?
It's not a stroll. It's a real two-day trek with a proper uphill climb to the rim and a long descent the next day, just without the summit scramble. Most people finish pleasantly tired, not wrecked. If you're a strong, trained hiker chasing a hard day, the summit routes will suit you better.
Can we add the summit later, or switch routes?
Switching before you book is easy, just tell us. Once you're on the mountain this route doesn't summit; the trail and the permit are set for the rim. If the summit is even a maybe, book the Full Rinjani 3D2N from the start rather than hoping to add it on.
Where does it start and finish, and can I leave luggage?
It starts and finishes at Senaru, on the north side of the mountain. You only carry a daypack. Your main bag stays safe with us and is waiting when you walk out. Tell us at pickup and we'll sort it.
